London - October 2015

Yes, I'm in London again. Yesterday I arrived at my friend's place in Bow and we had a great dinner in a pub around the corner. The crowds were a bit sad - England lost against Australia in the Rugby World Cup.

Today I've slept in (heaven!) and visited Tate Modern. Wanted to do that since I used the building and one of its exhibitions in a fic of mine and had some trouble to get the knack of the buildings interior design - there's only so much floor plans can do. Now, I know. LOL
I loved some of the shown art, as modern art is just my cup of tea. Yet, I was suprised that I loved the video installtions the most. All of them were very intruiging and meditative (not kidding).

Tomorrow I'm going to visit the British Museum and am looking forward to seeing the Rosetta Stone for real.
In the evening my friend and I are going to see Hamlet. I've heard good and bad about the performance, the stage, and the production. So far I can only say that everything seems to be perfectly organised and the Barbican's Box Office staff is so very helpful in corresponding emails. And that I love the production's posters - look at my shiny new icon and that lovely little Hamlet. So, yes, very curious how that goes.

There won't be any pictures from this London trip from me. I'm the worst person ever at taking pics - today I forgot my camera in my suitcase. Tomorrow it'll be there again. If you want to see a stage door picture, google it or browse tumblr - thousands of people have been there and done that. If someone's interested, I could write about my opinion on the play and performance - though a lot of people have written about the play, probably more eloquent than I ever could.

Oh, you're already there! :D I'm so envious! (Well, not really, you know I want all the best for you, but round little me also wants to go! Oh, BTW, I found out today I'm going to San Diego next February, imagine that!)
I'm glad you're having a blast, running around all the cultural sights of the town - if you haven't been already, make some time for Victoria & Albert Museum, I was super-impressed! And National Portrait Gallery, guh! Lovely! Damn, I miss living there. :(
I'm sure Hamlet is going to be a treat! The casting is top class, they'd probably have to work very hard to blow it and if one adds a bit of your infectious enthusiasm into the mixture, I'm sure you'll enjoy your evening very much. Sherlock playing Hamlet, are you kidding me!? They'd have to show commercials for Ariel in the break if they wanted to make it bad! ;)
I don't care about the pictures or the play's script, but I'm interested in your impressions of it, so if you feel like sharing - I'll be all ears!

I need to write a post about it otherwise I'm probably going to burst. LOL
Now I know why everybody tells you, you need to see Shakespeare on a stage. Will try to post something the next days, by Friday at the latest.

I wanted to meet you, but I also wanted to spend some time with my friend. And as she is working a lot of hours I had to make the most of the short time with her. I hope you don't mind! The next time I'm in London, we hopefully manage another meet up. :D

Will put my thought together over the next days. Short version: I had a really good time and enjoyed the performance. :)

No, you're not the worst at taking pictures, because that title belongs to me. I was forever lugging the camera around with me and never taking any. I finally just stopped carrying it. I don't have one of the new fangled phones that you can take pics with either. Now I just go with my memory. I find I enjoy what I'm seeing a lot better than with the camera.

Enjoy London, I'd love to be there too. It's been ages since I was there.

I'm nearly as bad as you at taking pictures. Most often I carry the camera around and forget about it. Or I take about three pictures while others take 30. I have a smart phone but its camera isn't the best. So, these pics are mostly for myself and nothing fancy to show off.

I had a great time and will try to come back asap. A little easier for us Europeans, I admit.

I saw your London post and was too busy to comment at that time. Will try to come back to it.

I really enjoyed the play. It was quite impressive, but I have to admit that I'm not that much of a theatre-goer than you are. Well, I do plan to see Hamlet in the theatre again in spring - this time in German only a 15 minutes drive away. I'm too curious to see the same play in a different language, performed by a company I know nothing about. :D

Seeing it again in German will be really interesting I think, it will change so much in meaning and rhythm alone? I've never seen it done in Dutch, I'd like to though.

Oh, the seats were fabulous! They were not only so close to the stage but also on the side of the gallery. They were perfect. My friend couldn't warp her head arount it and asked me how I managed to get such tickets and I could only shrug and said it wasn't me who had done the magic :D.

Yes, it's going to be very interesting. As there are a few different manuscripts of Hamlet and each production does different things with cutting out parts because directors rarely do a four hours play, there are also different translations. I seriously hope they'll use the newer one. I read the first hundert pages in the old version and bought the new one because I found it so convoluted and stiff with that ancient language. The new version might be 'modern' but it's vivid and alive and therefore a lot better. And I'm sure lots of people disagree with me and see it just the other way around. LOL

*laughs* It took a couple hours of being in line on the website and then clicking, if I recall. But it was worth it! ;)

And I think there are very valid reasons to update a play, language doesn't remain the same, and neither do audiences, as long as the spirit of the story is still there I think it makes perfect sense :)
