I've seen it many times, it's really good. It's only 7 episodes so it's not long but truly intense. Just like the other two HBO war series: Band of Brothers and The Pacific. Like you I discovered the series following a fic rec, I got intrigued, so I downloaded it. Later my mom bought me the dvd box set as a gift. Couldn't you download the episodes?
That fic by Tevere is amazing, it's more than just a gk fic. The fandom is full of Brad/Nate, but if you wanted to read some Ray/Walt, which I love, I made a small rec list a few years ago. :)
