What news to wake up to.

Tbh, I'm not surprised. Yes, of course I hoped for the best which means Clinton as a lesser of two evils. Looks like that's not gonna happen.

My gran always says "history repeats itself" - not in the same settings, but in general. Societies rise, have a peak, and then ... fall. Just look at the Pharaos or the Romans, and if that's not enough ... look at our ugly German history. We were lucky last time, because our country and its people weren't totally destroyed by the victorious countries.
Before WW II Germany was in a similar state like many countries (like the US) are in today. There were "Golden Twenties", but actually only a rich minority enjoyed these days. Most were fighting against recession, for their jobs and to just live a normal life. Then someone came along who made big promises, who wanted to "make things right" and "our country great again". If you listened carefully, he also spoke about his plans in all details and how he would do it all. Well, the world saw. More than 6 millions Jews and 50-80 millions in total died. That's not great, that's horrible and it will never cease to be one of the worst examples of humankind.

Well, all the fear wasn't an excuse back than, neither it's one today. As you I'm afraid too, because Trump seems to be even more crazy than Hitler was and draws even less distinctions between friends and foes. I fear for all my friends over there and for humanity.

I guess you as a German have an even better historical perspective of what this victory means. My only hope is, that perhaps he didn't win senate and congress as well (in spite of his thinking, he cannot rule without the support there), because if he did, the world is truly fucked. He'll back out of Kyoto protocol and I think Obamacare has seen it's last days. Canadian immigration website crashed completely. As my BF put it: "2016 Trump won the election, 2019 my district won the first Hunger games." :P I guess his voters got who they deserve, but the sad thing is, the rest of the world did as well. :P I'm sad and disappointed, but not really surprised. I didn't think the Americans would hand the Brits over the Stupidity-of-the-year award that easily. Let's see, how they handle plummeting markets first, perhaps that will be a bucket of cold water in their faces. Sad, sad day. The winter is here and the head Whitewalker just entered the White House.

Congratulations on such an important date in the history - I still remember it happening (because I'm slightly older than you, LOL), but it probably didn't have such a profound emotional impact on me as it did on the Germans.

Here, the Melania's home town actually hung out the American flags, imagine that! Well, I'd let the US annex the damn place if they promise to also import our stupid and never bring them back! :P Mostly, I'll just be introducing myself to the Americans as half Croatian for the next four years in the way of an apology. That money-hungry puppet on the string Trump married is definitely not the best Slovenian women can offer. :P :S It was like waking up this morning to Trump winning and seeing a Dark Mark above your house! :P

I actually have a few pieces of the Berlin Wall that I treasure. My step-dad was a WWII vet and it was very important to him to get on a plane and fly to Germany and take his hammer and pick and join in the destruction. He came home with a pile of pieces and felt much better for it. He's been gone now for 15 years, but I hold my little pieces of that wall very dear to my heart. The symbolism of what they represent is worth everything.

I think you're right. This is history repeating, and again it shows that selling hope 'trumps' better knowledge. 2016. What a dark year.

It's terrifying. The politics of hatred and fear wins again. After Brexit, I can't be totally surprised, but I can still be devastated.

*cries and cries*

That's what I'll be doing tomorrow. Tonight (early am) I'm too numb for tears.

I am terrified of what is to come. He is a legitimate narcissist and endlessly singing his own praises. I love my country, but right now I'm disgusted, embarrassed and horrified by what the majority of Americans have chosen. They have been taken in my a man who is the least presidential individual I've ever seen. They believe his lies and empty promises. He has a good catch phrase: Let's make America great again! Sadly, it's not going to happen. Like Nero fiddled while Rome burned, Trump will luxuriate in his ivory/gold Trump tower while America goes down in flames.

really good insight Nia, and a wake-up call (hopefully) for the world. I don't know how this has happened, and I'm on the sidelines watching it, but it seems here in Australia we're not much better (so much rhetoric about Us and Them, and our policies on refugees are fucking atrocious, absolutely fucking horrific)

Actually I have nothing useful to add here at all, really, but I really didnt think this outcome would happen
