How to Talk With a Scottish Accent

My dear, this may be useful for your trip!

That's the fantastic life of a mother: Playground today, Edinburgh tomorrow, aye? Well for me actually, it's playground tomorrow, too... No, no envy here at all! So, off with you, and have a brilliant time!

The Scottish accent is a really fun accent. It is very simple to learn but many will be impressed by it. Follow these steps to speak like an authentic Scottish Highlander.

1 If you wish to pass for a Scot, you must learn to speak like one. Familiarize yourself with the slang of the Scots.

2 Learn to roll your Rs. Roll your Rs only once. Do this especially after a D, a T or a G.

3 One expression I like to use is "a little bubble at the front of your mouth," What this means is you must speak from the front of your mouth.

4 Make sure that you say words joining the syllables. If there are two short words together, pronounce them as one. Don't speak too fast, though. Drop the G from words ending in G: "evenin", "evening'".

5 Replace not with nee. "Did not", "didnee"

6 The vowels are key in a true Scottish accent. Is are always pronounced like in "fright". Pronounce Es like "eh" as in "bed".

7 The best way to develop a Scottish accent is by listening to it. Get to know Scots you know a little better, watch Scottish movies or go to Scotland.
